Where do the Original Bach Flower Remedies come from?
The Bach Original Flower Remedies were developed by Dr Edward Bach a Harley Street doctor and well known Physician, Bacteriologist, Homeopath and Researcher. He believed that attitude of mind plays a vital role in maintaining health and recovering from illness.
He identified 38 basic negative states of mind and created a plant or flower based remedy for each one.
After leaving London in 1930, Dr Bach explored the countryside in search of the remedies for several years. In 1934 he decided to settle down and create a centre for his work, and chose Mount Vernon, a small cottage in Sotwell, Oxfordshire.
He spent the last years of his life at Mount Vernon and it was here that he completed his research.
Nowadays, Mount Vernon is better known as The Bach Centre, and the present custodians continue to prepare the mother tinctures (first process in making the remedies), often using the same locations that Dr Bach identified in the 1930's.
The Bach signature guarantees that you receive the original Bach Flower Remedies , prepared as they have been since Dr. Bach's time with tinctures made exclusively by the Bach Centre at Mount Vernon.

What are the Bach Flower Remedies?

Choosing the right Bach Flower Remedies for you
Recognising exactly how you feel is the key to choosing the most appropriate Bach Flower Remedy. Try to pinpoint how you are feeling at the moment. Then match the exact mood you're in with the appropriate remedy.
For example, if moving house is making you feel frustrated and impatient, try Impatiens. And if you are finding it hard to adapt to your new neighbourhood, try Walnut.
Sometimes we find it difficult to be honest with ourselves. Few of us want to be seen as jealous or over-protective, but once we have admitted how we feel, we are halfway towards balancing that emotion. So, if you have trouble working out your feelings, why not ask someone who knows you well to help?
We have included a remedy chooser on the website, to help you simplify the process of combining several rescue remedy's together.
We offer a range of courses and seminars which can be booked online to help you become more competent at compiling flower remedies.
For information on courses please visit the "Learn More" section of the website to find out about the Bach International Education Programme (BIEP).
Dr Bach created an emergency combination containing five flower remedies - Impatiens, Star of Bethlehem, Cherry Plum, Rock Rose and Clematis.
Rescue Remedy combines these five Bach Original Flower Remedies and can be used to help you cope with immediate everyday situations such as going to the dentist, interviews, making a complaint or wedding day nerves. It can also help in times of crisis or trauma such as bereavement, a relationship breakdown or redundancy.
Rescue Cream is a general skin salve to sooth and restore. Containing a blend of six flower remedies, it lets you apply cream externally and moisturises rough, dry skin to restore it to its natural good condition.
How are the Bach Flower Remedies made?
Preparing the Bach Original Flower Remedies is a three step process as detailed below;
Mother tinctures are prepared from plant material and natural spring water using either the Sun or Boiling Method as defined by Dr Bach.
The mother tincture is made up of the energised spring water [Step one] mixed with an equal quantity of 40% brandy. The brandy acts purely as a preservative for the remedy.
To make the stock bottle, the mother tincture is added to 30ml of 27% brandy.
How Bach Original Flower Remedies are made
There are two methods of preparing the Mother Tinctures for the Bach Original Flower Remedies.
The Sun Method: Dr Bach used this method to make 20 of the remedies, most of which are delicate flowers and bloom in the height of summer.
The Boiling Method: Dr Bach used this method to prepare the remaining 18 remedies, from trees and bushes and plants, most of which flower in the early part of the year.
The use of alcohol
Dr Bach used alcohol in his preparations, usually brandy, for its preservative properties. It is there to guard against microbial contamination which could otherwise grow in the water-based remedies. The alcohol is not an active ingredient.
In the early days when chemists were supplied with Mother Tinctures to prepare the stock remedies, they used either rectified spirit or pure alcohol. To those who found this confusing, Nora Weeks explained:
'In preparing the stock bottles, including the Rescue? Remedy, at Mount Vernon, we use brandy instead of rectified spirit added by the chemists. The brandy like the rectified spirit, is used only as a preservative and makes no difference whatever to the strength or efficiency of the remedy.'
Who takes the Bach Original Flower Remedies
